The abandoned island
of Schokland, Zuiderzee
The
Netherlands
At this former island people drowned and
many bravely survived during centuries of struggle
against the tides and the winds and the waves
of the Suydersea (Zuiderzee).
Although the island of Schokland is very small,
halfway the island was an official state border
between
Holland and Overijssel, that divided the island
in North (Catholic) and South (Protestant).
Four villages were established on the island,
on high artificial hills, most probably existing since
ancient times.
Spirits are always awake at this Spirit Place
and ready to
make conversation with the visitors.
There are special ley lines here
at this unique island of Schokland
under the protection of Unesco.
The island of schokland is now part of the
Noord-oost-Polder
after having
been abandoned for a century.
An old harbour is still there without water
and ruins of
one of the four churches.
The picture lets you stand on the island overlooking
the roaring sea.
But the sea has gone.
