Here begins chapter 5.

5.1

Here has to be added in Sanskrit:

Ashtavakra said:

Na-tae-blood-silk-kaen-upi-kim-shudhahah-tayktum-

ichchhsi-saghhaat-vilyam-kurbvan-evam-eva-

layam-vraja/5,1/.

  Na = not, tae = you [absolute aspect of life],

 sang = contact, Asti = are, kaen = with anything,

UPI = even, kim = what, shudhah = the pure one,

tayktum = to renounce, ichchhsi = desire,

saghhaat = compound of the body life, vilyam = demolishes,

 kurbvan = carry out, evam = in this way,

eva = surely,

layam = the state of dissolution of the thoughts,

 vraja = reach.

Ashtavakra said:

You are not bound by anything.

 What does a pure person like you need to renounce?

Putting the complex organism to rest,

you can find peace.

5.1

5.2

Udaeti-bhvatah-vishvam-vaaridheh-eva-budbudhah

-iti-giaatvaa-ekam-aatmaanam-evam-eva-layam-vraja/5,2/.

  Udhaeti = emerging, bhvatah = of you, absolute aspect of life,

vishvam = universe, vaaridheh = of the sea,

eva = like, budbudhah = bubbles, iti = this,

giaatvaa = know, ekam = one, aatmaanam = soul,

evam = in this way, eva = surely,

layam = the state of dissolution of the thoughts,

vraja = attain.

All this arises out of you,

like a bubble out of the sea.

Knowing yourself like this to be but one,

you can find peace.

5.2

5.3

Partyakasyam-upi-avastutvaat-vishvam-na-

asti-amalae-tuyai-rajju-sarap-eva-

vyktam-evam-eva-layam-vraja/5,3/.

  Partyakasyam = become obvious, upi = but,

avastutvaat = because being imaginary,

vishvam = universe, Na = not, asti = is,

amalae = pure, tuyai = in you, rajju = cord,

sarap = the snake, eva = like,

vyktam = become obvious in the thoughts,

evam = in this way, eva = surely,

layam = the state of dissolution of the thoughts,

vraja = attain.

In spite of being in front of your eyes,

all this, being insubstantial,

does not exist in you, spotless as you are.

It is an appearance like the snake in a rope,

 so you can find peace.

5.3

5.4

Samah-dukh-sukhahah: poornah-aashaa-niraashyyoh:

 samah:  samjeevit-martyuk:

 san-evam-eva-layam-vraja/5,4/.

 samah = unchanged, dukh = sorrow,

sukhah = happiness, poornah = perfect,

aashaa = hope, nairaashyyoh = desperate,

samah = unchanged, samjeevit=life, martyuk = died,

San = form of the life, evam = in this way,

eva = surely,

layam = the state of dissolution of the thoughts,

vraja = attain.

Equal in pain and in pleasure,

equal in hope and in disappointment,

equal in life and in death, and complete as you are,

 you can find peace.

5.4

Here ends Ashtavakra chapter 5.
